Etonic Stabilizer 1980 vintage sneaker ad

Today we’ve got a 1980 vintage running shoe ad for the Etonic Stabilizer model runners. These runners had a double lacing system and some other interesting engineering. This original vintage Etonic Stabilizer print ad is available at our web store RewindRunning.com.

Ad info is below:

Without the rear-foot lacing system the heel can slide in the heel cup of the shoe.
The rear-foot lacing system holds the heel snug for greater running control.

THE STABILIZER.
WHY TWO LACES ARE BETTER THAN ONE.

The Etonic Stabilizer helps protect your feet from torquing stresses at the heel and contributes to proper leg and foot alignment: the rear-foot lacing system*, pioneered by Etonic, gives added control, stability and reduces heel slip. And the more you run, the more your feet can feel the extra difference of Etonic engineering. Extras like the Dr. Rob Roy McGregor' SUOPHAS* (Single Unit One-Piece Heel and Arch Support) which pushes nature's padding under the heel and cushions the force of heel strike. A wide toe box minimizes irritation, and a tough Z-studded, three layer outersole provides excellent traction. The Etonic Stabilizer. Double lacing to double your running protection.

Keds 1980 MILLENNIUM, OPEN-ROAD, BREAKTHRU, SEABREEZE, PROFILE and BREAKAWAY vintage sneaker ad

Here’s a 1980 vintage sneaker ad for the Keds Millenium, Open-Road, Breakthru, Seabreeze, Profile and Breakaway model running shoes. There’s a great description for Keds cutting edge technology in this ad:

The upper has a nylon mesh that's been computerized to place airvents in strategic positions.”

Also, the logo on these looks a lot like the Gallenkamp scats logo in the next ad below. 👇

Ad info is below:

KEDS.YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE RENAISSANCE TRAINER FOR MEN AND THE PHOENIX FOR WOMEN ARE THE TWO BEST SHOES MADE.

Once you get a good look at them, you'll believe it too. And there's more. Many of these same features went into the design of our Millennium (Men's) and Seabreeze (Women's) trainers.

• Same replaceable Wear Plug System
• Same lightweight, durable, polyurethane midsole
• Same pre-molded external heel counter as Renaissance
• Suede toe-piece reinforcer for extra wear
• A new light-weave Dupont mesh upper
• 9 ounces (men's size 9).

Open Road (Men's) and Profile (Women's) round out the Keds training shoe revolution. They're lighter than most conventional training shoes yet provide an exceptionally durable outsole and shock absorbent midsole. And, we've also come up with incredibly light, high performance racing flats, The Breakthru (Men's) and Breakaway (Women's). The outsole is durable SBR rubber. The upper has a nylon mesh that's been computerized to place airvents in strategic positions. All this weighs just 5 ounces. Unbelievable. The new running shoes from Keds. Something to believe in. Etonic KM-501, Street Fighter KM-505 and KM-705 vintage sneaker ad from 1980

Here's a 1980 ad from Etonic featuring the Etonic KM-501, Street Fighter KM-505 and KM-705 sneaker models. One weird fact about Etonic was that during their running shoe heyday from 1976 to 1986 they were owned by Colgate. The same minty fresh Colgate that you may have brushed your teeth with this morning. This original print advertisement is available over at our RewindRunning.com web store.

Nothing protects this equipment, quite like this equipment.

You don't have bats, racquets, clubs, gloves, nets or goal posts. For a runner, the equipment list is simple: your body and your shoes. And it's no secret that the right shoe can make a difference as to how the rest of your equipment will function.

That's why we build so much protection into Etonic/km running shoes. We start with the Dr. Rob Roy McGregor' one-piece heel/arch support.* This unique device encourages a more rounded heel, gently forcing your natural padding under the foot to provide its own cushioning. So your foot acts as a natural shock absorber, helping the rest of your body to withstand the continuous jarring inherent in long distance running.

Etonic/km also incorporates a flared heel for greater stability, a sturdy heel counter for increased support, a high, wide toe box to min-imize toe irritations and many other highly protective features. All available for men and women in our tough, lightweight Street Fighters and the highly acclaimed Km-501. Protect your body in

Etonic/km running shoes.

Vintage Converse Arizona sneaker ad from 1980

Here’s an old 1980 Converse ad for the Arizona model runners. If you want to learn more we previously posted another ad for this model here.

Ad info is below:

INTRODUCING THE PERFECT SHOE FOR AN IMPERFECT WORLD. THE NEW CONVERSE ARIZONA:
Wherever you run, there's a surface out to get you...hard, unyielding pavement; rough, uneven dirt; soft, unpredictable turf. The pounding, twisting punishment you absorb on these surfaces is incredible. Now, Converse has a shoe that puts the odds in your favor.

The Converse Arizona, A Totally Integrated Running System
At Converse we believe that a high-performance training shoe should combine stability, shock absorption and traction. The Arizona features an Integrated Running System* engineered with precisely this in mind.

Stability
Over-pronation, the leading cause of runners' injuries, is minimized through the unique Heel Lock System', which wraps the counter snugly around the heel and literally locks it in place. This feature combined with a rein-forced nylon mesh upper and molded insole provides a degree of stability you just can't get in any other shoe.

Shock Absorption
Hard surfaces shouldn't be hard on your legs. That's why the Arizona features a midsole layer of Sport Cell', a highly shock absorbent material designed exclusively for Converse. This substance not only dissipates the initial impact of heel-strike, but also effectively directs residual shock out the side of the sole.

Superior Traction — On Every Surface
Because man does not run on pavement alone, the new Arizona is designed with extra traction features. Our Toe Propulsion Ridge maximizes traction on toeoff. The scientifically designed outsole studs reinforce critical wear areas... a must for all-surface running. And our Heel Wear Bar reinforces the primary impact area... helping the Arizona, and you, last miles longer. Converse believes all these features work together to make the Arizona a fast, safe, comfortable training shoe over any surface. Whether you run on the pavement, through the park, or on country roads, we're confident that the new Arizona will make a good hard run easier on your legs.

Converse Arizona 1980 vintage sneaker ad

Here's an old school 1980 vintage sneaker ad for the Converse Arizona. According to the ad they teamed up with a NASA engineer to help design it and this sneaker is loaded with tech for traction, shock absorption and stability.

HIGH TECH OR YOUR FEET THE CONVERSE ARIZONA

The new Converse Arizona' was developed in consultation with a NASA contractor. The result is an Integrated Running System (patents pending) that offers runners new levels of stability, shock protection, and traction on every surface.

The Sportcell mid-sole, created from a new high-technology material, provides extra protection by actually dissipating shock. Converse took the question of sole configuration out of the hands of clothing designers, and put it into the hands of engineers. The result is a sole that grabs hold of virtually anything —even loose dirt — to provide solid footing on any surface. The Toe Propulsion Ridge maximizes traction on toeoff. Outsole Studs and Heel Wear Bar keep traction high even as the shoe wears. The Heel Lock System provides state-of-the-art stability. When the shoe is laced, this newly developed "passive seatbelt system" locks the heel into place. This means over-pronation, the leading cause of runners' injuries, is minimized.

Man's feet, his legs, his knees — all his body parts are limited. His mind is not. He can create high technology to compensate for his limitations —technology to help him run faster, safer, more comfortably. He can create the Converse Arizona. Puma produces running shoes that are clearly superior. The sport's largest publication agrees.

"If one company can be singled out for its advances in a year, it would have to be Puma ... Puma has been doing its homework:. wrote Runner's World Magazine in its 1980 Shoe Survey issue.

Runner's World gave 5-Star Ratings to the following Puma running shoes:

Fast Rider: This new men's trainer weighs only 278.7 grams. A revolutionary development, the Federbein sole, features studs arranged in inverted "V" patterns that spread to cushion impact. It's one of the most com-fortable shoes Puma has ever produced.

Lite Rider: Built for racing, this shoe offers good impact protec-tion front and rear plus excellent sole wear. Removable and wash-able insoles form to your feet.

Track Rider: Slip-last construc-tion makes this trainer-racer fit like a glove, while micro-soft rubber midsoles and the new Federbein sole combine for an excellent ride. This shoe ranked 1st in sole wear among men's racing flats.

Brooks RT-1 vintage sneaker ad featuring John Walker

Here's a old vintage Brooks ad for the John Walker RT-1 running shoes from 1980.

Ad info is below:

"IF YOU TRAIN MORE THAN 50 MILES A WEEK, YOU REALLY OUGHT TO IN MY SHOES:"

"The folks at Brooks asked me to design a new shoe—a shoe that could be used for training and racing. Naturally, I jumped at the chance, because it just makes sense biomechanically to train and race in the same shoe. "Right up front, though, I made sure everyone understood one thing. I had to test this new shoe personally: To run in it under all kinds of conditions. Or my name simply wouldn't go on it. "Well, my name is on the Brooks RT-1. And I'm here to tell you that the RT-1 is the perfect marriage of a featherweight racing shoe with a firm, durable training flat. "The RT-I is light (about 7 ounces in size 9). And it's cool, because it's made of Brooks Special Open Mesh Nylon. " Plenty of cushioning in all the right places, too. With a wide, flared heel and Varus Wedge."' So you can train day after day without worrying about injuries. "And the RT-I is built on a racing last. Narrow at the heel and arch for closer fit and more speed. With extra 'toe spring' for a better kick and stronger finish. "Try the RT-1 for yourself. I can't promise you better racing times. But I can tell you I enjoy running in the RT-1. And I think you will, too. It's the most comfortable shoe for racing and training I've ever worn. In a word... Sensational."

1980 Brooks Hugger GT vintage running shoe ad

Here's a 1980 ad for the Brooks Hugger GT running shoes. In this ad Brooks brings a little 1980 photoshop skill to the fore and takes on a trash talking combative tone with Nike, adidas, Etonic and New Balance and setting off the Great Sneaker War of 1980. 👊

Ad info is below:

PUT NIKE, ADIDAS, ETONIC AND NEW BALANCE TOGETHER AND YOU STILL WONT HAVE k THE BROOKS HUGGER GT.

There are plenty of fine running shoes. And they all have one or two outstanding features. But no other shoe has all five of the distance-building features the new Brooks Hugger GT has.

OUR FABRIC: GORE-TEX.
The Hugger GT is the only shoe in the world with a Gore-Tex fabric upper. Gore-Tex is waterproof and breathable, which means two things: your feet stay drier when it's wet and they breathe beautifully when it's hot. Either way, you'll run more comfortably in all kinds of weather.

OUR HEEL HUGGER STRAP. One other shoe has a stabilizing lace, but it's not our Heel Hugger Side Strap. Our Side Strap holds the entire heel counter snug against your heel which, in turn, makes the Hugger GT and your foot a more biomechanically efficient (and less injury prone) structure. It also makes the Hugger more comfortable for runners with narrow heels.

OUR VARUS WEDGE. Some shoes have a midsole wedge, but it's not the Varus Wedge. We slant the sole of our new Hugger GT 3° to compensate for the fact that most runners run on the outside edge of their heels and pronate inward. As a result, you'll notice considerably less heel shock in the Hugger GT and much less twisting of the foot and ankle during pronation, too.

OUR CUSTOM CONTOUR INSOLE. Most shoes have a soft insole, but it's not the Custom Contour Insole. The Custom Contour Insole in the Hugger GT actually forms to your foot as you run and stays that way. It's like having your Hugger GT's custom-made just for you.

OUR SOLE. Some shoes have a racing sole, but it's not our Racing Stud Sole. We triple-reinforce the outside edge of the Hugger GT Sole at the critical heel strike point. The result: our soles wear longer, which means you don't have to resole or buy new shoes as often. We also drill a scientifically aligned pattern of holes in our midsole, which helps the Hugger GT flex more naturally with your foot as you run and makes the shoe lighter.

OUR PRICE. EXPENSIVE, BUT WORTH IT. This new Brooks Hugger GT isn't for everyone. But think about it this way. You could buy four other shoes and still not get all five distance-building features the Hugger GT has. It's truly a sensational shoe.
